The solution properties of two amphoteric surfactants derived from amino acid have been investigated by using a polarizing microscope and a differential scanning calorimeter. These surfactants were N<SUP>α</SUP>, N<SUP>α</SUP>-dimethyl-N<SUP>ε</SUP>-lauroyl lysine (DMLL) and N<SUP>α</SUP>, N<SUP>α</SUP>-dimethyl-N<SUP>ε</SUP>-palmitoyl lysine (DMPL). The liquid crystal formed at low concentration region as the critical micelle concentration.<BR>Moreover, the structures of liquid crystal varied with increasing concentrations of surfactants. The analysis by DSC indicated that a phase transition from the gel to the liquid crystal took place. Endo-thermic peak caused by phase transition appeared at 24°C (DMLL) and 49°C (DMPL).<BR>Heat of transition of DMLL and DMPL was about 7. 1 kcal/mol and 12. 1 kcal/mol, respectively.
