The characterization of the silica gels surface-treated with phenyltriethoxysilane (PTEOS-SK 11-15), phenyltrimethoxysilane (PTMOS-SK 11-6), methacrylic acid-3-trimethoxysilylpropyl ester (MAA 3 TMOSPrE-SK 11-10), 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane (3 CPrTMOS-SK 11-5) and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (3 AmPrTEOS-SK 11-5) was performed by means of microanalysis, surface area, dispersive property into water, infrared spectra and the pyrolysis. The followings were recognized that (1) The number of surface group was estimated as 3-8×1014cm-2 from the data of microanalysis (2) PTEOS-SK 11-15, PTMOS-SK 11-11, 3 CPrTMOS-SK 11-5 showed hydrophobic and lipophilic property (3) Although MAA 3 TMOSPrE-SK 11-10, 3 AmPrTEOS-SK 11-5 showed hydrophilic property they showed the different tendency from that of the original silica gel since they coaggulated into interface of the n-hexane and water (4) The characteristic absorption due to organic functional group included in the alcoxysilane used for surface-treatment of silica gel was observed in IR-spectra of surface-treated silica gels (5) The surface of the surface-treated silica gels was ascertained to be composed of _??_ SiOSi. (OH)2R from the analysis of the vapors evolved through their pyrolysis (6) Since the color of surface-treated silica gels after pyrolysis changed from white to black or brown, the carbon deposit on their surfaces was recognized to occur during their pyrolysis.
