Low temperature plasma oxidization treatment of carbon black was examined with two different coupling types of high frequency discharge about the effects of coupling types for treating efficiency ; one is conductive coupling and the other is capacitive coupling for evolving the plasma. The effect of stirring speed during the plasma treatment was also investigated and the plasma oxidation mechanism was discussed.<BR>The treating efficiency in the case of inductive coupling was better than the other. Stirring speed affected to the kind and the amount of surface groups formed.' When the stirring was accomplished vigorously, mainly week acidic phenolic hydroxyl groups were formed, and when the stirring was accomplished mildly, mainly strong acidic carboxyl groups and lactone type carboxyl groups were formed. It was assumed that the formation of phenolic hydroxyl groups was mainly due to autoxidation reaction of carbon black with radical formed on the carbon black surface and oxygen molecules, and formation of carboxyl groups was due to opening of aromatic ring with phenolic hydroxyl group.
