Thermosettable emulsions were prepared by radiation method and persufate method emulsion copolymerization of n-butyl methacrylate, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and acrylic acid. The polymerization behavior of both method was quite similar. The emulsion properties, however, differed from one another in the distribution of carboxyl groups and particle size. Radiation method produced a emulsion having particles of smaller size and less amount of water soluble polymers than persulfate method. With regard to radiation method, the polymerization stability, mechanical stability and mutual solubility with melamine resin and water soluble acrylic polymers for paint formulation were tested to determine the optimum polymerization conditions. The excellent emulsion was obtained with semicontinuous batch process by using Na- [nonylphenyl polyoxyethylene (p=2) 3- (sulfo) 2- (hydroxy) propylether] and polyethylene glycol nonylphenyeether of HLB 16.
