The pyrolysis of silica gels treated with n-, iso-, sec-butanol was investigated through the analysis of the vapors evolved during the pyrolysis by means of quadrupole mass spectrometers or gas chromatograph-quadrupole mass spectrometer, if necessary, in comparison with the pyrolysis of these butanols and tertiary butanol in gaseous phase or over silica gel. Both the dehydration and the dehydrogenation of these butanols proceed simultaneously in the pyrolysis of these materials in gaseous phase, whereas the pyrolysis products in the pyrolysis of these materials over silica gel were mainly olefine and water. Therefore it was recognized that the dehydration reaction was promoted selectively by silica gel. The pyrolysis products of the surface-treated silica gels were olefine and water, however, since the ratio of the amount of water to that of olefine thus formed was not constant, these were conceivable to be formed separately under a different reaction mechanism. From these results, these surface groups were perceived not to be surface species chemisorbed in the form of ROH, but the ones bonded chemically with the surface silanols.
