Authors studied the flame retarding effect for the polypropylene-dechlorane-Sb2O3 systems at various Sb2O3/dechlorane weight ratios.<BR>The flame retarding effects were evaluated with oxygen index, <I>TG-?Ts/TsR</I> ratio, weight loss rate, and HCl gas evolution time dependence of released amount of SbC13.<BR>The formation of SbC13 was examined by X-ray diffraction analysis of heated sample.<BR>The results of the experiment are as follows.<BR>1. The synergistic action between Sb2O3 and dechlorane was observed at Sb2O3/dechlorane weight ratio of 1/3.<BR>2. The maximum oxygen index at Sb22O3/dechlorane weight ratio of 1/3 corresponds to the maximum hydrogen chloride evolution, minimum <I>TG-Ts/TsR</I> ratio and minimum weight loss rate, respectively.<BR>3. The flame-retardation of polypropylene is influenced not only on the released amount of SbC3 but also on the formation velocity of SbC3.
