Silane coupling agents were effective on acid-proof treatment of inorganic pigments. This study dealt with five inorganic pigments, i. e., two of cadmopone-type cadmium vermilion, A and B, red iron oxide, prussian blue and zinc oxide. As to the typical operation for the surface treating, pigment was immersed in alcoholic solution of silane coupling agent (2% based on the weight of the pigment), heat-dried, and then cured at 105°C for 2 hrs. This treatment gave easily the pigment water-repel-lent and improved acid-proof properties, and made more compatible with Japanese lacquer paint.<BR>For the acid-leaching study, a sample of 100 mg of the treated pigment was immersed in 50ml of 5.5% acetic acid or 5.9% hydrochloric acid in a stoppered Erlenmeyer flask at 60°C, and occasionally shaken at the same temperature. The procedure was continued for a half hour to 7 hrs. The concentration of the dissolved metal in the acid extract was determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Also it was found that the Japanese lacquered bowls pigmented with the treated and untreated cadmium vermilion A did not leach out any of cadmium and mercury when they were filled with 5. 5 % acetic acid and heated at 60°C for 30min.
