The rate of crosslinking reaction and the highest crosslinking density for epoxy resin curing with tertiary alkylamines have been studied by heat deflection temperature (HDT) technique.<BR>The higher the curing temperature and the curing agent concentration, the faster the rate of crosslinking reaction. The curing condition for the maximum crosslinking density of cured resin was found on all the tertiary alkylamine-epoxy resin system.<BR>The highest HDT, namely, crosslinking density, in each systems was around 100°C when cured at 90°C in the presence of 3-5 mol % curing agent. These HDT's were lower than that of other catalytic type curing agent system such as BF3-amine adducts.<BR>From these results, the authors assumed that the polymerization of epoxy groups was faster at the higher curing temperature, and the rate of chaintransfer reaction increased.<BR>The effects of the structure, basicity (pKa) and substituted phenol group of N, N-dimethylalkylamines on the rate of crosslinking reaction and the crosslinking densities of cured resin were little, but the effect of steric hindrance of the tertiary amine-epoxy system might be large, so N, N-diethyl-benzylamine could not cure the epoxy resin in these experimental conditions.
