The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of the difference of the specific gravity on the dispersion process with mechanical agitation.<BR>The apparatus consists of a cylindrical vessel (<I>DT</I> =150 mm) made of clear acrylic resin and Rushton-type impeller (<I>DI</I>=49 mm). Water and a mixture of n-C7H16 and CCl4 were used as the continuous phase and the dispersed phase. The specific gravity of the dispersed phase was prepared for the values of 1.000, 1.050, 1.100, 1.150 and 1.200 (gr/cm3) respectively. Agitation was continuously carried out at 530 rpm for 60 min. The photographs of the droplets were concurrently taken by the direct and the indirect methods.<BR>The following results were obtained : <BR>(1) According as the specific gravity of the dispersed phase increased, average diameter became the smaller value.<BR>(2) It was found that the direct method was better than the indirect one, when there was the difference of specific gravity on liquid-liquid dispersion.<BR>(3) Experimental equation for the relationship between the energy efficiency of agitation η and the agitation time θ was as follows.<BR>log η=α'log θ+β'
