The rate of crosslinking reaction and the best curing conditions for epoxy resin curing with heterocyclic and aromatic tertiary amines have been studied by heat deflection temperature (HDT) technique.<BR>The lower the basicity of tertiary amines, the lower the rate of crosslinking reaction. Order of the rate of crosslinking reaction was as follows ; Alkyl tertiary amines >> Piperidine > α-Picoline > Pyridine > N, N-Dimethylaniline.<BR>The best curing conditions (e. g. the curing condition obtained the highest HDT) were 15 mol%, 21 mol%, and 30 mol% : for piperidine, α-picoline, and pyridine, respectively, at the curing temperature 90°C.<BR>The highest HDT in above conditions were 88°C, 115°C and 110°C for piperidine, α-picoline and pyridine, respectively.<BR>These HDT were nearly the same for that of alkyl tertiary amines, but were lower than that of other catalyst type curing agents such as BF<SUB></SUB>3-amine complexes and imidazols.
