Japanese lacquer films with the added methyl esters of oleic, linoleic and linolenic acid were investigated for their hardening process.<BR>The results obtained are as follows : <BR>(1) The hardening of lacquer was retarded by the addition of such methyl esters, the more the number of double bond of a methyl ester the less retardation resulted. When the amount of the ester added was doubled, the hardening time prolonged two or three times.<BR>(2) The absorption band at 1,215 cm<SUP>-1</SUP> which appears in the course of the hardening of the lacquer alone shifted towards the lower wave number side upon the addition of the esters.The difference of the wave number shifted from 1,215 cm<SUP>-1</SUP> after 22 days, Δ<I>n</I>, was found to relate to concentration in percent by weight of the ester in the lacquer film, x, according to the following equation within the concentration range of the esters investdigated. Δ<I>n</I>=3.5, √<I>x</I><BR>(3) It was found that in the early stage, the hydroxyl groups of urushiol molecules form hydrogen bonds with the carbonyl groups of the ester molecules and the hydrogen bonds gradually disappear in the course of the hardening of the film.
