In the previous report, authors discussed the mechanisms involved in the cross-linking reaction of methacrylic copolymers with melamine resins in terms of the rate of reaction determined for the cross-link density, and it was pointed out that the apparent activation energies for the cross-linking reaction depended on the melamine resin (hexakis methoxy-methyl melamine) content.
In this study, authors examined that the activation energies depended also on the ratio of methacrylic acid to methacrylic ester in the backbone polymer.
These findings suggest that the segments of the methacrylic copolymer chains which contain reactive carboxyl groups are the important ones; it can be considered that the diffusive motion of these segments might determine the rate of cross-linking reaction.
