Transpolymerization is the generation of one condensation polymer which is necessarily accompanied by the simultaneous and stoichiometric hydrolysis of another polymer.
This type of polymerization was investigated.
When treated with either polysodiumarsenate or polyphosphoric acid, triethyleneglycol was converted to polyethyleneglycol, as either polysodiumarsenate or polyphosphoric acid was degraded to its respective monomer, dihydrosodiumarsenate and orthophosphoric acid. However, on similar treatment, ethyleneglycol and diethyleneglycol were respectively dimerized and cycleized to dioxan, instead of polymerizing. 1, 4-Butandiol was likewise converted to tetrahydrofuran.
Using polyphosphoric acid, an equimolar mixture of 3, 3'-diamino benzidine and sebacic acid was polymerized to poly 2, 2'-octa-methylene 5, 5'-bibenzimidazole at a lower temperature than the conventional condenzation polymerization.
