Thermosetting properties of glycidylmethacrylate (GMA) copolymers with tertiary butylacrylate (t-BuA) or tertiary amylacrylate (t-AmA) were studied. As gelation occurred in early stage of block and benzene solution polymerization, these copolymer samples were prepared in the Redox system emulsion polymerization at law monomer concentration. The results are as follows.
(1) By the baking condition at 180°C for 30 minutes, the both copolymer emulsions mentioned containing about 50 mol % of GMA showed good resistance to usual organic solvents. Better tendency of insolubility was observed in GMA/t-BuA copolymer than that of GMA/t-AmA. This result was made clear in degree of insolubility of the copolymers treated at comparatively low temperature as 120°C for 30 minutes, and in that of diminution in epoxide groups by infrared spectra analysis.
(2) Diminution in epoxide groups in both copolymers baked 200°C for 30 minutes was measured by infrared spectra. The results showed that the degree of diminution was approx. 50% in the copolymers containing less than 40 mol GMA. On the other hand, the degree of diminution in the copolymers containing more than 60 mol GMA became to be fairly affected by nature of these two comonomers.
(3) In case containing over 20 mol % functional monomers at 50% total monomers concentrations, gelation occurred during the emulsion polymerization reaction. The copolymer film comprising 10 mol % of GMA and 10 mol % of t-BuA in total monomers showed good physical and chemical properties by thermal treatment at 200°C for 30 minutes.
(4) For the practical application of the thermosetting films, the copolymer system comprising phosphoric acid and ketones, which is described in the Report II of this series, will be more advantageous than the polymers of GMA/t-BuA or GMA/t-AmA in view of the baking condition and stability of the polymerization process.
