Performance Evaluation of a CAD System for Detecting Masses on Mammograms by Using the MIAS Database

Since the evaluation is influenced by the case selection, it is necessary to apply some common databases in the performance evaluation. To evaluate our computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system for detecting masses,320 images from the Mammogaphy Image Analysis Society (MIAS) database in UK were applied in this study. Our algorithm for detecting masses was based on a standard adaptive thresholding technique which had been developed in our group. However, the preliminary result was not as well as those for a Japanese databas e. After we adjusted some thresholding values of our system, a 90% sensitivity with 0.8 false positive (FP) was achieved which indicated that our scheme was effective for the different databases in both Japan and UK. Moreover, the differences between the MIAS and a Japanese database were also discussed.
