The effect of dietary β-cyclodextrln (CD), a ring-shaped molecule having seven glucose units, and cholestyramine (CSTY), a bile acid binding polymer on the prevention (Experiment 1) and amelioration (Experiment 2) of obesity was investigated in the beagle dogs given a diet high in fat for 4 weeks. The composition position of a control diet was: Hill's c/d dry 200g, lard 117g and corn starch 34g. β-CD (23.4g) and CSTY (10.6g) was induded in an experimental diet by replacing corn starch in the control diet. In Experiment 1, body weight rapidly increased in the control dog, but dogs given a diet containing both β-CD and CSTY slightly gained their body weight. In Experiment 2, body weights in obese dogs given the β-CD diet, CSTY diet or β-CD + CSTY diet were rapidly reduced compared with those given the control diet. However, no significant differences were observed among the three dietary treatments.<BR>These results suggest that dietary β-CD and CSTY would benefit dogs with obesity in both before and after the incidence of the syndrome.
