Cyclodextrin (CD) is a ring-shaped molecule with three forms ( α-, β- and γ-CD) which differ in the number of glucose units. Of the three CDs examined, only β-CD suppressed food intake in the rat. Thus, we primarily investigated the mechanisms by which β-CD suppressed food intake in the rat before its application for dog foods. β-CD is known to form inclusion complexes easily with cholesteml and bile acids. resulting in decrease bile acid utilization. By co-suppiementing with cholesterol, food intake of β-CD diet was improved. To investigate the relationship of decreased bile acid utilization by β-CD to the suppressive effect of β-CD, the effect of β-CD was compared with cholestyramine (CSTY, a bile acid binding polymer). β-CD, but not CSTY, depressed food intake of rats. β-CD can also inhibit α-amylase activity. Therefere, the effect of the dietary carbohydrate source on the suppressive effect of β-CD was investigated. β-CD severely suppressed food intake when the carbohydrate source was corn starch, but not sucrose. Furthermore, supplementation with α-amylase improved the suppressive effect of β-CD. Thereafter. a preference for β-CD was investigated in rats and dog. There was no preference or avoidance for β-CD in dogs and rats. It is sugthat dietary β-CD may be a useful ingredient for obese and/or diabetic dogs.
