An adult case of idiopathic, intussusception was reported, and cumulative adult cases during a five-year period (1985-1989) in the Japanese literature were also analyzed.<BR>A total of 109 cases including this case was collected. These adult cases rela tively lacked in clinical findings such as blood in the stool, palpable mass, and cramping abdominal pain, which were predominant in child cases. The majority of intussusception in adults were chronic or subacute in nature and acute obstruction was not the usual situation. In addition, the adult cases differed from child cases in predominantly having some definite mechanical causes including benign or malignant tumor.
