In recent years, interest in the preparation of nanostructured materials has grown due to their distinctive properties and potential technological applications. The mass production of such a nanomaterial is a basic requirement to utilize its unique properties for various applications. We designed a novel technique to prepare SiC nanofibers by melt spinning of polymer blend consisting of SiC precursor polymer (e.g. polycarbosilane, PCS) and decomposable matrix polymer (e.g. polystyrene, PS), which disappears completely during pyrolysis. Fine PCS particles were homogeneously dispersed and blended into a PS matrix, where the PS/PCS ratio was kept >1 by weight, obtained blend was melt spun into fiber in Ar, further it was cured by dry air and finally heat-treated at 1000°C in Ar. SEM and XRD results showed the formation of SiC nanofibers with diameters of 50 nm to 700 nm.
