Carbon-metal complex alloys were prepared through reaction of carbonaceous precursors with silver and iron salts through solution route. Carbon precursors chosen were different types of pitches, polymeric fibers as well as cokes. Metal ion uptake was found to be influenced by nature of carbonaceous precursors. Coal tar pitches with high softening point and high aromatic content exhibit lower metal uptake and lower surface characteristics. Precursors in fibrous form exhibit higher surface area and retention of metals and effectiveness as biocidal. Iron acts as better catalyst than silver for activation of carbonaceous materials.
