Aluminum, silicon and carbon black in the molar ratio corresponding to the chemical composition of Al4SiC4 were mixed with a small amount of triethanolamine (TEA) by a planetary ball mill and then added into ethanol without a presence of moisture. The ethanol solution was heated at 200°C until its viscosity became about 100 cSt at room temperature. As-prepared solution was used as a precursor solution. By heating the C-C composites coated with precursor solution, homogeneous Al4SiC4 film with a thickness of about 100 μm without any cracks was successfully formed on the surface of C-C composites. The surface of the coated composites oxidized for 10 h was measured by XRD. The surface oxidized at 600°C gave only the diffraction peaks of Al4SiC4. The peaks corresponding to four phases of Al4SiC4, mullite, α-and γ-Al2O3 were detected in the surface oxidized at 1000°C and above. At 1400°C, the diffraction peaks of mullite and α-Al2O3 were observed. In oxidation resistance tests, it was found that a marked improvement in oxidation resistance was observed at the temperature ranging from 600 to 1400°C; that is, no mass loss with oxidation occurred.
