Fabrication of Multi-Layered Electrochemical Cells with Sc2O3-Stabilized ZrO2 Electrolyte, CeO2 Thin Film and LSCF Catalytic Electrodes for NO Removal

In this study, symmetrical electrochemical cells consisting of ScSZ electrolyte coated by two LSCF thick film electrodes and a GDC or GDC/YSZ/GDC buffer layer, which were sandwiched between the ScSZ electrolyte and LSCF electrode, were successfully fabricated for a de-NOx device application. A GDC or GDC/YSZ/GDC buffer layer was able to prevent the harmful interfacial reaction between the ScSZ and LSCF, which was easily observed in the LSCF/ScSZ/LSCF electrochemical cell. Dense buffer layers with homogeneous microstructure could be deposited on the ScSZ electrolyte by the pulse laser deposition (PLD) process, and the oxygen partial pressure during the deposition strongly affected the microstructure of the GDC or YSZ thin films. As a result, the electrode polarization resistance of the electrochemical cell was significantly decreased in the multi-layered electrochemical cell with the GDC buffer layer.
