Dry sliding wear of single phase α and two phase α/β composite sialons has been studied through block on ring wear tests. The effect of composition on wear resistance was studied by varying the rare earth cation employed in stabilizing the α phase. Under high load wear, where mechanical type fracture was dominant, there was little effect of rare earth cation but a large effect of microstructure, with the elongated grain microstructure in the composites producing lower wear volumes. Under low load wear, where tribochemical reactions are thought to play a major role in the wear mechanism, microstructure was less important but there was a large effect of composition. Under these conditions the single phase α materials showed better wear resistance than the composites for all rare earths. Within these single phase materials, those sintered with smaller, more refractory rare earths had wear volumes an order of magnitude lower than the larger cationic radius Y-stabilized sample.
