A detailed study on surface fracture of alumina ceramics was carried out with respect to grain size under different stress conditions. Different stresses, namely i) severe tensile stress by sliding scratch test ii) mild tensile stress by block-on-ring test and iii) severe compressive stress by recording hardness test were introduced on alumina specimens and their behavior was studied in detail. The influence of grain size on the fracture behavior was noticed in the circumstance of severe tensile stress. The mild tensile stress on alumina samples revealed very low wear rate and the wear behavior was observed to be independent on the grain size of alumina. Also, under severe compressive stress, the deformation area was found to be independent on the grain size of alumina ceramics.
