The effects of friction on the bearing mode failure of a pinned-joint are investigated experimentally. The effects of frictions are discussed by the stress distribution around a pinned-joint hole obtained through a computational simulation. The pinned joint strength tests are conducted to show the effect of friction using PTFE sheets for 5 to 6 mm pin-diameters. Under the condition with PTFE inserted between the pin and hole, pinned-joint strength is decrease by 30-40% compared to the case without PTFE. The dominant failure mode of the specimens with PTFE is interlaminar delamination.Three-dimensional FEM analysis is conducted to investigate the effects of friction on the pinned-joint. As the result, it is found that for both pin-diameters friction reduces the stress around the pinned-joint hole and that the prediction of the stress distribution of pined-joint hole does not need the coefficient of friction as a function of the fiber orientation and a contact pressure.
