It is thought that mass mortality of larval tuna is caused by a lack of buoyancy associated with changes in larval specific gravity during early development. We measured changes in the specific gravity of southern bluefin tuna (SBT) larvae. The yolk-sac and oil globule were absorbed by 2 and 3 DAH, respectively. Larval specific gravity was 1.025±0.001 until two days after hatching (DAH) and increased rapidly to 1.034±0.006 by 4 DAH. The specific gravity of SBT larvae 1 DAH was higher than that of the rearing water. SBT larvae tended to sink rapidly in the static rearing water.
