The ventilation volume in the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas decreased with decrease in the salinity in the ambient water, and stopped at salinities of 22.4±2.5 psu. However, the ventilation arrested by the low salinities was resumed by feeding Chaetoceros gracilis, and was maintained down to the salinities of 16-21 psu, and was stopped at a salinity of 10 psu. These results suggested that a mechanism for provoking the ventilation by feeding probably has priority over that for arresting the ventilation under low salinity condition.
