This study was performed to investigate the distribution of <I>N</I>-acyl homoserine lactone (AHL)-producing bacteria in the intestinal tract of ayu <I>Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis</I> for the better understanding of the ecology of opportunistic pathogen in aquaculture environments. The density of AHL-producers was 1.1×104 CFU/<I>ml</I> in the rearing water and 2.8×106-2.8×108 CFU/g in the intestinal tracts while no AHL-producer was detected in artificial feed. The obligate anaerobes isolated from the intestinal tract and rearing water could not produce AHL. A total of 30 AHL-producers were identified as <I>Aeromonas veronii</I> (25 isolates), <I>A. popoffii</I> (3), <I>A. media</I> (1) and <I>Chromobacterium aquaticum</I> (1). These results suggest that involvement of the AHL-producing bacteria should be considered for the further understanding of opportunistic infection in freshwater fish including ayu.
