The spawning behavior of the Hokkaido eight-barbel loach, Lefua nikkonis, an endangered species of the family Balitoridae in Japan, were observed in a pair reared in an experimental tank. Spawning occurred in January 2007 with a water temperature of ca. 18°C which had declined from ca. 28°C in summer. On days when spawning occurred, the male chased the female and pecked at the female. Then they burrowed into the artificial spawning substratum and spawned remaining adjacent to each other. The pair spawned 7 batches of eggs during the 21 day reproductive period; therefore batch-spawning was confirmed in this species.
