Effect of ion nitriding and chemical composition on the sand erosion resistance in the unidirectionally solidified high chromium white cast irons containing up to 27.5 mass % chromium were studied by measuring the weight loss. Ion nitoriding lowered the wear loss of the alloy to 1/4∼1/3 of those of high chromium cast irons containing 10 to 19.1 mass % chromium. Ion nitriding had a little effect on the sand erosion resistance in the 27.5 mass % Cr irons and the 14.8 mass % Cr irons having an austenitic matrix with alloying Mo and Ni element. The high wear resistance in ion nitrided high chromium cast irons was attributed to the formation of two types of nitride compounds at the surface layer.
