The carburizing rate of many kinds of carbrizers was investigated using a high frequency induction furnace, 3000 Hz-50 kg. Carburizer, the quantity of 2.2 % C of melt, was added to the melt, containing 1.4 % C-1.8 % Si, at 1820 K and the melt was hold at the same temperature for 40 min. Following results were obtained. 1) The carburizing rate increases with the graphitization degree of carburizer. 2) The size of carburizer affects strongly on the carburizing rate and which shows the maximum at the average size of 2.0 mm. 3) The sulfur in iron melt decreases the carburizing rate markedly. 4) The agglomeration of powdered carburizer with pitch improves the cauburizing rate but no effect with cornstarch. 5) The carburizing process is reasonably explained by the wetting and dissolving mechanism of carburizer to melt. Namely, the wetting incubation time of one grain of carburizer does not depend on its size, while the dissolving rate does.
