Effect of Si content on the properties of Cr-Mo-V cast steel for high temperature service is investigated using two air-melted and titanium-deoxidized castings with 0.08%Si. Through metallurgical and mechanical examination of these castings reveals that low Si casting has superior properties to conventional Cr-Mo-V castings. By lowering Si content, inverse V segregations are eliminated and the number of microporosities is reduced. Mechanical property data exhibit improvements in toughness and ductility of low Si casting. Creep rupture strength and susceptibility to welding cold cracking are improved with the decrease in Si content.
