A titanium bridging reconstruction plate is used for mandible reconstruction in many cases. The major complications of mandibular reconstruction using this reconstruction system are detachment of the plate due to loosening or breakage of the screws, plate fracture, intra- and extraoral exposure of the plate, and infection. We investigated these clinical risk factors in this study of 40 patients (male: female = 26:14, age 43 to 82 years (mean: 63.9)) who underwent reconstructive surgery using a titanium bridging reconstruction plate. The results revealed that the number of postoperative retained functional mandibular teeth might be one of the major risk factors for plate loosening and fracture.
