Elastic Stress Analysis on Corrugated Fiberboard Container of a Box Shape under Uniform Compressive Loading in Upper and Lower Edges (On Isotropic Side Plates)

An elastic formulation of bending deformation for side plates of the case (widith 350 mm, height 300 mm and thickness 5.44 mm, longitudinal coefficients 291 N⁄mm<SUP>2</SUP> and Poison's ratio 0.10) of the corrugated fiberboard box shape made by applied uniform compression loading of width direction strain zero in upper and lower edges was expressed by the application to reasonable stress function combination. And from this formulation, bending stresses were calculated and these characteristic behaviors were discussed.<BR>Absolute maximum value of bending normal stress (σ<SUB>bxmax</SUB>=-0.0652 N⁄mm<SUP>2</SUP>) in width direction is at plate centers and maximum values of bending normal stress (σ<SUB>bymax</SUB>=0.262 N⁄mm<SUP>2</SUP>) in height direction, principal stress (=0.262 N⁄mm<SUP>2</SUP>) and deflection (=3.36mm) are at centers of side edges. And absolute maximum value of bending shear stress (τ<SUB>bxymax</SUB>=±0. 163 N⁄mm<SUP>2</SUP>) and principal shear stress (=±0.163 N⁄mm<SUP>2</SUP>) are at plate corners. Ratios of bending stresses and plane stresses (σ<SUB>xmax</SUB>, σ<SUB>ymax</SUB>, τ<SUB>xymax</SUB>) areσ<SUB>bxmax</SUB>⁄σ<SUB>xmax</SUB>=6, 6, σ<SUB>bymax</SUB>⁄σ<SUB>ymax</SUB>=2.6, τ<SUB>bxymax</SUB>⁄τ<SUB>xymax</SUB>=33.5 and those large ratio values are made of bending deformation easiness for the shape of wide and thin side planes.
