Flow patterns in a circular domain with an inlet and an outlet on the domain boundary is a simplest model of ocean surrounded by continents and connected through channels to other oceans. When the center of the domain is located at the north pole, i.e. in a polar cap, a large polar vortex emerges with the flow going along the left boundary to the outlet. However, when the domain is shifted southward, the western boundary flow going along the right boundary to the outlet should prevail in the flow field. In this note, we study numerically the transition of the polar cap flow to the western boundary flow, in relation to the conservation of the potential vorticity.
