Weld zones need periodic nondestructive surface inspection in order to maintain their reliability and safety in oil storage tanks, power plants, and so forth. The need to develop a new, rapid and low-cost nondestructive surface-test method has prompted consideration of eddy current testing as a prospective alternative because of its rapid and non-contact properties. However, conventional eddy current testing has the serious drawback that even a minute change in the probe lift-off generates significant noise, which disturbs the nondestructive inspection by masking the flaw signal. Eddy current testing has thus been considered inherently difficult to utilize in weld zone inspection, since the unevenness of weld zones makes variation in probe lift-off inevitable. We conducted an experiment applying a new, uniform eddy current probe, consisting of a long wide tangential exciting coil and a long rectangular detecting coil, to nondestructive surface testing of a weld zone covered with anti-corrosion paint. The experiment results have indicated that the probe can pickup longitudinal and transversal flaws in a weld zone by single scanning, at reasonable signal-to-noise ratios, if appropriately arranged.
