There are many points that call on a worker's experience in lathe work. This is true in the contents of the center hole. Accidental destruction of the center hole causes a great problem. This paper describes the safety standard concerning the center hole, involving analysis of stress in the hole by experiment and calculation. A photoelastic method and a finite element method of analysis were used in this study. Although much research has used theoretical analysis, research examples of inclusions through experimental analysis are very few. This study used a two-dimensional test specimen model of the center hole, polycarbonate and three different materials -epoxy resin, PMMA and polyethylenethat were used as elliptic inclusions. A load was given to the model by an indenter, which located any destruction of the center hole that was in process, and an artificial crack was inserted into the model at the position thought to be the dangerous section. As a result of this experiment, experimental equations relating to the equivalent stress were obtained.
