In this study we developed an intelligent composite material by embedding a TiNi shape-memory alloy (SMA) fiber in a polycarbonate (PC) matrix. Using this specimen, we examined the shape recovery force due to phase transformation of the SMA. For the experiment, we created a new method which allowed us to record both shrinkage and thermal expansion of the test specimen on real-time base. Based on these observations, we evaluated the shape recovery force under various electric heating conditions and ambient temperatures (in the range from -40°C to 80°C). The results indicated that it would be possible to construct a shape recovery force control system by utilizing the change in electric resistance of the SMA. The system would self-detect the strain of the composite materials from the change in electric resistance of the SMA. Then, it would cope with deformation of the composite materials using electric heating according to the strain signal from an abnormal load.
