Comparison of two methods of ammonia analyses (Solorzano method and Sasaki-Sawada method) were carried out using natural seawater samples. The regression equation between the two series of analytical values was Y=0.39+0.95X (Y, Sasaki-Sawada method; X, Solorzano method), and the correlation coefficient was 0.991. The slope of the regression line, however, was significantly different from 45° (Y=X), and the Y-intercept did not pass through the origin. Solorzano method showed higher reagent blank, which may be due to the contamination in sodium hypochlorite. The molar absorption coefficient of Sasaki-Sawada method (1.85 × 104) was slightly higher than that of Solorzano method (1.60 × 104), which means that the former can be more sensitive. From these results, in addition to the easiness in the procedure and the applicability to samples of broad salinity range, Sasaki-Sawada method is recommended to be employed for the routine ammonia analysis at coastal experimental stations.
