Application of Harmonic Analysis to Annual Variations in Current using Semi-regular Sampling Data from an ADCP installed on a Regular Ferry

The relation between a sun-synchronous infrequent semi-regular sampling with an ADCP (acoustic Doppler current profiler) installed on a regular ferry and a harmonic analysis for the K<SUB>1</SUB> and P<SUB>1</SUB> constituents was clarified. Double aliasing of the same cycle with different phases was caused by the semi-regular sub-sampling of the K<SUB>1</SUB> or the P<SUB>1</SUB> constituent, where the aliased period of either constituent is 365.24 days; this is the same as that of another Sa constituent. Although it is impossible to separate the plurality of waves having the same period for a regularly sampled time series, it is possible to separate two arbitrary constituents out of these three (i.e., K<SUB>1</SUB>, P<SUB>1</SUB>, and Sa) for a semi-regularly sampled time series. As contamination by the non-separated constituent in analyzing the two constituents cannot be avoided, it is very important to decide what two constituents should be estimated. The selection of the Sa and K<SUB>1</SUB> constituents, by excluding the P<SUB>1</SUB> constituent, makes the estimation of the K<SUB>1</SUB> constituent relatively accurate by imposing the influence of seasonal current variations on the Sa constituent. Moreover, it is possible to determine the validity of eliminating the P<SUB>1</SUB> constituent from the harmonic analysis by comparing the amplitude of the P<SUB>1</SUB> constituent extrapolated, using the ratio of equilibrium tidal amplitude between the K<SUB>1</SUB> and the P<SUB>1</SUB> constituent with the amplitude of annual variation of residual data wherein only the K<SUB>1</SUB> constituent was deleted.
