My experiment-oriented research achievements in ecological studies on marine zooplankton in the past 30 years are reviewed. First, on the basis of the data collected from polar seas through tropical seas, metabolic activities (oxygen consumption, nitrogen excretion and phosphorus excretion) of epipelagic marine zooplankton were expressed as a function of body mass (dry weight, carbon weight, nitrogen weight and phosphorus weight) and habitat temperature. This set of global equations provides a solid basis for assessing energy flux and associated material cycling by zooplankton communities in the epipelagic marine realm at large spatial scales. Second, the Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) was successfully transported from Antarctic waters to the cold-room at the Australian Antarctic Division, where new information about biology and physiology of this animal, including starvation tolerance (one possible overwintering mechanism), lifetime fecundity, larval development, growth, longevity, and specific dynamic action in metabolism, was gained by the successful establishment of techniques of their long-term maintenance. These new data advanced our knowledge about unique features of this key species in the Antarctic marine ecosystem. Third, life cycle patterns and material budgets of various zooplankton populations in Toyama Bay (southern Japan Sea) have been evaluated through the analyses of seasonal population structure data and laboratory rearing experiments. Similar studies are now in progress in the Oyashio region (western subarctic Pacific). All these results of my research clearly demonstrate the experimental approach to be a powerful tool to solve many problems associated with ecological research on marine zooplankton.
