With the increase in the number of automobiles, traumatic cervical syndrome or whiplash is frequently reported and is gaining the attention of many people.Patients suffering whiplash injuries often experience anxiety as a side effect. In many cases this anxiety creates psychological and mental stress which makes the condition difficult to cure. For a period of 100 months beginning in August, 1966 we kept clinical statistics on our pain clinic out-patients with whiplash injuries.1. Of these patients the highest number, 36%, were in their 30's, Patients in their 20's composed the next largest group and patients in their 40's followed. 77% of these patients were male and 23% female.2. The greatest number of injuries were incurred in the years 1967-1968. The number of injuries declined in succeeding years.3. The most common complaints of whiplash injury patients were headache and neck pain. Shoulder stiffness, numbness of the upper limbs, posterior neck pain, and a feeling of dullness in the head were also common complaints.4. The patients who showed excellent progress after treatment underwent 1-10 treatments. Those showing good progress were treated 1-50 times. The patients who responded poorly to treatment were treated 1-10 times.5. Among the patients who responded with excellent or good progress after treatment, it was observed that in all cases from 2 to 12 months had passed since the onset of symptoms. Results with patients who were treated only 2 months after injury were completely effective.6. Three different types of treatment were administered. The first type included acupuncture and moxibustion and was administered in 9.5% of the cases. The second, nerve blocking, was administered in 3.8% of the cases, and the third, a combination of the first two administered in 86.7% of the cases. The reason the combined treatment was used most frequently was that general treatment methods characteristic of Oriental medicine were required for general complaints such as shoulder stiffness, etc.7. The results of combined treatment were as follows:Excellent 90% recovery 15%Good 60%-80% recovery 41%Fair 10%-50% recovery 34%Poor 0-10% recovery 10%
