Effects of Acupuncture Treatment for Spasmodic Torticollis

Based on the classification of spasmodic torticollis as a psychosomatic disease, acupuncture therapy was administered. Four patients, 3 males and 1 female exhibiting severe symptoms were selected as subjects. Three of them showed remarkable improvement after 2-6 months of treatment.Acupuncture therapy was administered chiefly at 10-15 points on the neck, back and arms. At some of these points electric current was applied through the needles. The results of this study indicates hat acupuncture therapy effectively alleviates stiffness and pain in the shoulders, neck and back. Thus, it may be concluded that acupuncture therapy may be effective in the treatment of excessive tension in the neck area.
