The effectiveness of acupuncture in improving circulation has been observed by many acupuncturists however few experimental reports on this subject have been published. In our efforts to compile a quantitative description of the therapeutic effects of acupuncture, we have found that the height of the pulse wave increased upon acupuncture insertion at the femoral artery, We investigated these effects using sphygmoplethysmography.Patients suffering from peripheral arterial obstructive diseases were selected as subjects. They were divided into two groups, a control group and a test group. To the test group acupuncture insertion was administered into the femoral artery at the femoral triangle, to the control group patients intracutaneous pricks were administered as a placebo. Our experiments showed an increase of 18.2% in pre and 5 minute post-insertion pulse wave heights of the test group patients indicating an increase in peripheral circulation. No changes were observed in the pulse wave heights of the patients in the control group. Both the observations of other acupuncturists and our own experimental findings seem to contradict the belief that stimulation of the sympathetic nerves promotes the contraction of peripheral blood vessels, It has been recently discovered, however, that the sympathetic nerves also effect vascular dilatation and furthermore that this effect is dominant with stimulation to arteriovenous anastomasis. Our experiment may be regarded as stimulation to the femoral baroreceptor with measurement at the digital glomus. From this point of view, the stimulation effect on the circulatory control system is different from general excitement of the sympathetic nerves. In this aspect further study is required concerning the amount and area of stimulation as well as measuring methods.
