Metal corrosion machine rooms using a metallic plate exposure method was investigated with reference to the preventative maintenance of communication equipment.
The amount of sulfur corrosion on Ag plates was examined systematically over a one year period, gas analysis was performed, and the following results were obtained in the Uridura and Ajigaura telephone exchange centers.
(1) Seasonal the site dependent correlations to sulfur corrosion on Ag plates were shown in two machine rooms. The amount of corrosion in summer was about 5-6 times greater than that in winter. Moreover, the amount of sulfur corrosion in the Uridura center machine room in summer was about five times that of the machine room in the Ajigaura center.
(2) Gases inside and outside the two centers were analyzed. Carbon disulfide and carbonyl sulfide were detected at the ppb level, but hydrogen sulfide was below the detection level. The concentrations of carbon disulfide and carbonyl sulfide were highest is the Uridura center machine room.
(3) The source of the gases in the machine rooms in thought to derive from building materials used in the floors and walls, etc. These gases are presumed to increase as the temperature in the machine rooms rise. The main cause of sulfur corrosion in the machine rooms is likely to be carbonyl sulfide rather than carbon disulfide.
