Action orientation has been defined as the ability to exert volitional control over one's feeling, which has a greater tendency to move into volitional action. In contract, state orientation has been defined as the inability to exert volitional control over one's feeling, which has a greater tendency of no action. The purpose of this study was to examine re-test reliability and internal validity of a Japanese version of the Action Control Scale (ACS90) that had been developed as a scale for personality characteristics (action orientation/state orientation) . Since then, few studies have been conducted using Japanese version of ACS90, and there is a problem that the subscales of Japanese version of ACS 90 and ACS90 are slightly different. Additionally, ten years have passed since Japanese version of ACS90 introduction, during which subjects may have been influenced by the changes in the social situation. From these reasons, this study was implemented for additional assessment of Japanese version of ACS90.
A survey was conducted in 339 university students in July, 2004. Factor analyses for Japanese version of ACS90 were performed. Then, 3 factors were extracted from Japanese version of ACS90 similarly to the previous studies. It had high reliability and internal validity. However, an item of low factor loading and an item of high factor loading different from the factor designated by the ACS90 developer were also extracted. The scale seemed to be useful at large because the results matched ACS 90 and Japanese version of ACS90. However, the judgments were different between the ACS90 developer and the Japanese version of ACS90 maker concerning the choice of some items. A further detailed investigation is required in terms of items of the subscales.
For behavior modifications by health education, volitional emotional controls are important. Health education considering the personality of each participant may elicit more efficient and appropriate health behaviors. The relationship of the scale with concrete health behaviors should be investigated further.
