This study focuses on automated image mosaicing. Many automated mosaicing methods adopt Levenberg-Marquardt method which is a powerful non-linear optimization to find transformation coefficients between images. However, this method doesn't converge with large translation and requires good initial estimation. This paper proposes a novel method for initial estimation called"exhaustive search", which finds approximate translation, rotation, and scale between two images before non-linear optimization.<BR>A series of tests of mosaicing with simulation images resulted that images with more than 60% overlapped area can be merged automatically with positional error of 0.1 pixel with the proposed initial estimation method. The method has been applied to images taken by digital still camera and obtained similar results.
