A drum scanning micro-densitometer or a drum scanner is commonly used as an input device for image processing by computers for the reason of high digitizing rate of images. But it should be certified beforehand to what degree of precision is capable of being obtained in the reproduced images when it is used in the field of photogrammetry or remote sensing, where high positional accuracy is required. For high speed digitizing performance may be reached at the cost of high positional accuracy.<BR>This paper proposes a method of testing the positional accuracy of a drum scanner through a practical example. The positional accuracy is analysed in terms of positional repeatability and geometrical distortions. The respective procedures of the test are mentioned with underlying statistical method. Especially for separating uncorrelated noises from correlated signals in the geometrical distortions, the least squares filtering is adapted.
