Moleculat Shape Estimation of Mesophase Pitches from High Temperature <SUP>13</SUP>C NMR Spectra

In a liquid crystal phase, aromatic carbons of a mesophase pitch are observed at lower field in a <SUP>13</SUP>C NMR spectrum compared those of an isotropic pitch. When an aromatic compound is added to a mesophase pitch, some molecules of the compound ordered in the pitch and the fluctuation amplitude of the molecules is the same as that of the pitch constituents. Thus a fluctuation amplitude of a mesophase-pitch constituents in a liquid crystal phase can be determined from <SUP>13</SUP>C NMR signals of an added compound whose chemical shift tesor has been determined. In this paper, we proposed a method to estimate a molecular shape an average molecule of a mesophase-pitch constituents from high temperature <SUP>13</SUP>C NMR spectrum of the pitch containing coronene, and applied it to some mesophase pitches.
