The inhibiting effects of phosphorus additives on oxidation of pelletized and powdered natural graphite in air were studied. The additives which contained no metal element were found to inhibit oxidation of natural graphite effectively, irrespective of their chemical forms, while the additives which contained metal elements showed a different dependence upon the species of metal element and upon the molar ratio of metal element to phosphorus. It was found that the additions of Li and Na were more effective to inhibit oxidation in air at higher temperature.<BR>The activation energy for oxidation of natural graphite in air was also measured. The measured values were in accordance with the inhibiting actions.<BR>The ignition temperature of natural graphite with additives was described briefly.
